It is a new type of power-electronic converter for interfacing Renewable Energy Sources (RES) to the grid. It has a 3-phase, 4-leg topology while 3-legs forming a conventional DC/AC inverter bridge and the 4th leg forms a bidirectional DC/DC converter to control an ultracapacitor bank. The prototype is equipped with a new unified control for the DC/AC and DC/DC converters allowing it to operate as virtual synchronous generator.

R&D, Technology and Innovation aspects
Currently, the product has undergone successful unitary testing in the lab of University of Seville, Spain. The test showed that all the functionalities can be delivered. The test in relevant lab environment (reduced scale CIGRE benchmark gird) is to be finished in summer 2021. Next step required is the testing in actual relevant environment to reach TRL 6-7. Private investors and/ or public funding institutions are welcome to enable such demonstration.
All parts for bulding the UVSG have been defined as function of its power.
The individual parts of the UVSG are already available in the market. The innovation lies in their assembly and particularly in the control algorithms.
The UVSG can offer services which are currently in high demand and are procured by conventional power plants only. Thus, the market for these services is present, highly relevant, and is going to get larger in the future as electricity decarbonization expands.
