Result description
Scintillator-based X and gamma-ray detectors are designed to provide the energy and position resolution of the interaction point in the detector. There is an increased demand for high precision timing, in the picosecond (ps) range, specially driven by the introduction of Time-of-Flight (TOF) in medical imaging for PET scanners.
The concept developed in the frame of the ERC Adv Grant TICAL and exploited by Multiwave Metacrystal is based on multifunctional heterostructures, combining the high stopping power of scintillators (BGO, L(Y)SO, garnets), with the ultrafast photon emission from the 1D, 2D or 3D quantum confinement of excitons in nanocrystals, and the high performance light transport of photonic crystals and photonic fibers.
This revolutionary approach allows to simultaneously record with unprecedented precision the energy deposited in the scintillator, Its spatial distribution with a precision of 1mm, the time of the event with a few ps precision, the photoelectric-Compton sequence at small energy

The demonstration of proof of principle has been made and published. 2 patents have been files and a 3d one is in preparation
The next step is to develp a reliable and cost-effective metascintillator production technology, with can be scaled-up under well understood conditions
The immediately addressable market i^s the one of PET scanners, with 1000 machines sold in 2020 and a 50% increase in 2030 with 1500 machines.
The corresponding scintillator market represented 365M$ in 2020 with a projection of 566M$ in 2030
We expect a penetration in this market in 2023 at the level of 1% with a target of 30% in 2030
The objective is to licence our technology to large scintillator and/or PET compagnies, having already well established mass production and quality insurance culture. Advanced dicussions have already taken place with some of them.
