Pilot 7. Editorial Workflows to Increase Data Sharing provides an automated system aimed at increasing research data sharing at a key point in the publication process. When a manuscript receives a revision decision, the system automatically sends authors guidance on sharing data in trusted repositories, highlighting benefits such as improved visibility, reproducibility, and research impact. The workflow can be adapted across disciplines with tailored repository recommendations and examples. Preliminary results from pilot testing within participating journals show no substantive effect of the workflow on the rate of authors sharing data in trusted repositories. We conclude that more substantive measures, such as mandates to share data in repositories, are necessary to bring about change in data sharing practices.
