Result description
Game-based participatory approaches such as the SCORE GeoDesign & EBACraft games offer a powerful way to boost community engagement in spatial decision-making. Unlike conventional GIS platforms that often require technical expertise, these games simplify complex geospatial data & empower non-specialists to actively participate in planning. In the GeoDesign game, participants engage in a multi-round, map-based planning exercise using an interactive online platform. Starting with a defined area, players propose Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (EBA) strategies by placing solutions on the map, then discuss each other’s proposals, refining them through collaboration. EBACraft allows players to design & build local climate adaptation solutions using real geospatial data. Guided by facilitators, players creatively construct their vision for a resilient environment using Minecraft’s immersive tools. This experience encourages exploration, creativity, & collaboration while helping participants understand spatial planning and adaptation in an engaging, visual way. These tools gamify traditional spatial planning processes, making them more accessible, interactive, and engaging.
Addressing target audiences and expressing needs
- Collaboration
These games simplify complex climate planning by providing a visual and interactive platform that fosters informed decision-making. As such, researchers focussing on studying EBA options and climate resilience can benefit greatly from using these games to engage with diverse audiences.
- Public or private funding institutions
- EU and Member State Policy-makers
- Academia/ Universities
R&D, Technology and Innovation aspects
These games have been iterated and utilised by SCORE’s 10 Coastal City Living Labs with stakeholders to improve spatial planning discussions and decisions. The games are publically available for use.
