Result description
The InnWater Governance Platform is a digital support tool designed to strengthen water governance by providing structured knowledge, analytical resources and policy-relevant insights to public authorities and water governance stakeholders. It brings together governance frameworks, assessment tools, guidance materials and comparative analyses developed within the InnWater project, to support evidence-based decision-making and policy coherence across water-related domains.
It addresses key governance challenges such as institutional fragmentation, multi-level coordination, stakeholder participation and alignment with European and international water policy principles. By facilitating access to harmonised governance knowledge and practical resources, the platform supports authorities, practitioners and researchers in improving the design, implementation and evaluation of water policies.
The platform is primarily intended for non-commercial use and contributes to enhancing institutional capacity, transparency and resilience in water governance systems, particularly in the context of climate change adaptation and sustainable water management.
Addressing target audiences and expressing needs
- To raise awareness and possibly influence policy
- Collaboration
We seek institutional uptake, policy engagement, and collaboration to ensure the long-term relevance and use of the InnWater Governance Platform. This includes working with EU and Member State institutions and international organisations to raise awareness, support policy learning, strengthen water governance frameworks.
Collaboration with research and technology organisations is sought to provide expertise, support further development, and align the platform with evolving policy needs and scientific knowledge. The aim is sustained use as a public resource for evidence-based water governance.

R&D, Technology and Innovation aspects
The InnWater Governance Platform has reached a demonstration stage, consolidating governance frameworks, analytical tools and policy-oriented resources that have been tested and validated through project activities and case studies.
Next steps focus on consolidation, long-term maintenance, and wider uptake by public authorities and stakeholders beyond the project.
The InnWater Governance Platform is designed for high replicability, thanks to its clear methodology and integrated digital tools. Two external experts assessed its functioning and replicability in EU basins, showing how easily it adapts to different political, environmental, and climatic settings. The platform’s design makes it simple to integrate local data and customize governance assessments and simulations. Plus, our e-learning resources ensure local stakeholders can confidently adopt and use the platform, creating a ripple effect as communities initiate similar processes using InnWater’s proven methods and tools.
The InnWater Governance Platform is designed to be sustainable in the long term as a non-commercial, public resource supporting water governance and policy-making. Its sustainability relies on institutional uptake, continued relevance for public authorities and alignment with European water and climate policy frameworks.
Rather than market revenues, its long-term viability depends on integration into existing governance processes, potential uptake by public administrations, research organisations or policy networks, and continued use as a reference knowledge resource. Maintenance and uptake can be supported through institutional support, follow-up research projects or inclusion in broader European or national initiatives on water governance and climate adaptation.
By strengthening institutional capacity, transparency and evidence-based decision-making, the platform delivers lasting societal and environmental value, beyond the lifetime of the InnWater project.
