This service provides holistic energy performance testing of building envelope systems and components under realistic, yet controlled laboratory conditions, using the LivingLab pilot building operated by NTUA. Designed for Technology Readiness Level 5 (TRL5) validation, the LivingLab bridges the gap between laboratory testing and field deployment by simulating real-world building behavior within a reproducible and measurable framework.
The LivingLab is a single-storey modular test facility constructed from repurposed shipping containers, enabling quick reconfiguration of façades, windows, and other envelope components. It includes:
-
Multiple removable wall sections with different orientations (south, east, west)
-
Glazing and balcony door systems that can be easily swapped
-
Three independent thermal zones, allowing for separate climate control
-
Integrated underfloor heating/cooling and movable shading systems
This setup allows for extended measurement campaigns (6+ months) to evaluate the thermal, solar, and daylighting performance of innovative materials and systems under variable environmental conditions. It supports components such as:
-
Insulated walls and multi-layer panels
-
Passive or active glazing systems
-
Reflective and absorptive coatings
-
Bio-based or recycled material assemblies
The campaign combines multiple in-situ measurement services:
-
Thermal transmittance (U-value)
-
Thermal resistance (R-value)
-
Solar heat gain coefficient (g-value)
-
Visible light transmittance (Tvis)
-
Ambient and surface temperatures, humidity, heat flux, and solar radiation
Data is logged continuously and processed into detailed performance reports, with monthly updates and a final summary. The client may optionally attend the installation and testing phases, and training or technical consultation can be provided.
This service is especially valuable for developers, startups, research consortia, or manufacturers who want to validate their product’s energy behavior in a realistic scenario before proceeding to full-scale deployment or market launch.
