Result description
A functional electric motor prototype with multimaterial housings was investigated, manufactured, and tested, demonstrating robust behaviour and performance parity with the baseline while delivering meaningful gains in structural efficiency.
Achieved KPIs include:
- 27% housing weight reduction, currently limited by additive manufacturing wall-thickness constraints but with strong potential for further improvements through topology and lattice optimisation;
- up to 50% reduction in supply-chain lead time enabled by additive manufacturing and composite processing;
- over 200% increase in mechanical load capability of the CCF front plate compared to aluminium, supported by its five-times-higher specific tensile strength;
- 8% improvement in motor power density, with further gains expected in future scaled designs.
Overall, the results validate the feasibility and benefits of MULTHEM’s multimaterial approach for aerospace electric propulsion, providing a solid foundation for future optimisation, upscaling, and integration into next-generation lightweight electric machines.

R&D, Technology and Innovation aspects
The MULTHEM motor has been validated at laboratory level (TRL4). The next steps are to test the components in more representative environments and further confirm mechanical performance and manufacturing robustness of the multimaterial approach. We plan to advance this work through future Horizon Europe funding opportunities.
Our business model is designed to scale through modular multimaterial housing designs, additive manufacturing, and composite processes that can be rapidly adapted to different motor sizes and platforms. This enables efficient production ramp-up, reduced lead times, and straightforward integration for a wide range of aerospace customers.
The MULTHEM multimaterial housing concept is fully replicable thanks to standardised design rules, validated manufacturing processes, and repeatable additive and composite production methods. This ensures consistent quality and allows the same lightweight, high-performance solution to be delivered reliably across multiple motors, platforms, and markets.
Our business model is designed for long-term sustainability by creating clear value for customers, industry partners, and society through lighter, more efficient electric propulsion technologies. By reducing material use, energy consumption, and supply-chain impact, the MULTHEM approach contributes to lower environmental footprint while supporting safer, cleaner aviation. The combination of durable multimaterial architectures, scalable manufacturing methods, and strong collaboration with European stakeholders ensures that economic value is captured responsibly, while also promoting environmental and technological resilience beyond our organisational boundaries.
