Result description
The goal of NENU2PHAR project is to set up a new European value chain from microalgae acuatic biomass to PHA-based bio-plastic products. NENU2PHAR develops PHAs products integrated in a circular economy concept, from the production to the biodegradability or recyclability of plastic product to new compounds. The 8 products from 5 market segments are food packaging (4 type of products), packaging for cosmetic solution (1 product), plastic for medical device application (1 product), textile (1 product), and 3D printing filament (1 product).
Know-how on:
- Starch production from microalgae
- Processes to produce and refine starch from microalgae
- Fermentation processes using as feedstock starch hydrolysates from microalgae
- Process for PHA extraction and purification using green solvents
- Expertise in PHA formulation and compounding
- Knowledge on processes, methods and technologies for the compounding of PHA,
- Food packaging: Tray for cheese slices, Cup for compote, stand-up pouch for shredded cheese
- Food packaging: Pouch for wet products (yogurt)
- Packaging for cosmetics (roll-on bottles)
- PHA-based formulation for thermoforming with medium-high barrier properties and flexibility applied to plastic tray products
- Recyclability (sorting, mechanical recycling) of PHA and PHA-based blends
Addressing target audiences and expressing needs
- We are sharing our knowledge
The new bio-based value chain is ready to be commercially exploited
- Others/ No specific audience
R&D, Technology and Innovation aspects
The maturity of technologies are validated at TRL in relevant environment
The different steps of the value chain have the potential to be scalable business models as the sectors interconnected are already consolidated (plastic transformation sector, aquatic biomass production sector, bioproducts obtained by fermentation sector).
The knowhow generated allows the replicability and reproducibility of all steps of the value chain
