The Energy Research Lab (ERL) at the FHNW School of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geomatics is a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to testing and optimizing components for thermal and electrical supply systems in buildings. Established in 2013, the ERL focuses on evaluating both individual component performance and their integration within comprehensive building systems. The lab comprises two primary sections:​
1) Energy Systems Laboratory: This area centers on the assessment of heat pumps, phase-change storage units, solar thermal collectors, complex valves, and control systems.​
2) Light and Façade Laboratory: This section is dedicated to optimizing natural and artificial lighting in interior spaces, employing an interdisciplinary approach that considers architectural, design, and technological factors.
