The digital traceability system have two parts, one for those working in the sector (seafood value chain) and one for the general public (consumers).
The tool will track and segregate batches of seafood from the point of sale back to a catch area or farm (Backward traceability). It will be based on the GS1 (for product codes), EDIFACT (for data exchange) and FAO (for species, product presentation) standards. The information will be accessible to consumers via QR-codes labelled on the products packaging. The architecture of the system is based on a Central System that includes a database containing all the information relating to the Batches passing through the supply chain. This database will be fed by the companies along the supply chain either automatically (through automatic electronic data exchanges- EDI) or manually through a dedicated software application.
For consumers, the QR codes will be scanned through a smartphone application connected to the Central System. The app will allow consumers to access information about the product, its manufacturing and its nutritional value.
Addressing target audiences and expressing needs
- Business partners – SMEs, Entrepreneurs, Large Corporations
- Investor introductions
- Expanding to more markets /finding new customers
The targeted audience: investors, seafood stakeholders (processors, producers, consumers)
The needs: funds allowing to cover the operations of deployment and user support probably building a dedicated new corp
- Others/ No specific audience
- EU and Member State Policy-makers
- International Organisations (ex. OECD, FAO, UN, etc.)
- Other Actors who can help us fulfil our market potential
R&D, Technology and Innovation aspects
Demonstration activities have been performed during the project in several SMEs (farmers, processors, retailers), showing the good performance of the new tool. This tool is not focused on the internal traceability inside a company but on the traceability along the supply chain, therefore the involvement and commitment of different agents is needed. In this sense we need funds allowing to cover the operations of deployment and user support probably building a dedicated new corp that will bring together all agents involved in the seafood supply chain.
The tool can be modified in order to demand the requirements of the end users. That means that some records can be removed and others included.
As the tool is flexible it can be adapted to other sectors rather than the seafood supply chain.
We think so, but it is something to be studied
