Result description
The weld-overlay process supports a new generation of components that can operate in very harsh conditions of corrosion, high temperature and high creep strength.
Weld overlay process combines both high strength steel and a high-temperature corrosion-resistant alloy in the same component. The material (FeCrAl) is innovative and it was specially selected to work with molten lead.
A weld overlay is a type of cladding that uses a welding process to melt a material onto the surface of another different material. A weld overlay is performed to protect the base material from the wear of corrosive environments. Solar applications are of interest but any industrial process that requires an alloy with high strength and high corrosion resistance may be of interest.
This process was specifically designed to work with molten lead and therefore the known applications are advanced nuclear (III generation) and energy storage for solar plants.
