Prior to the NSETHIO project, Nodding syndrome (NS) was considered a mysterious condition. We showed that NS is one of the clinical presentations of onchocerciasis-associated epilepsy (OAE). We developed a strategy for the management and prevention of epilepsy in onchocerciasis endemic regions. Our interventions have changed the local belief that epilepsy is caused by witchcraft, and reduced epilepsy-related stigma and costs for affected families. We have increased access to anti-seizure medication resulting in improved quality of life for PWE and their families. We obtained significant reductions in frequency of seizures and related consequences (trauma, burns, death), resumption of schooling for children, and socio-professional rehabilitation for adults. Onchocerciasis elimination programmes have been strengthened, by introducing bi-annual ivermectin distribution and a community-based “slash and clear” vector control method. The socio-economic impact of our project is profound and promises to be sustainable because most interventions employ grassroots methods with considerable community involvement.
