The Coastal Northwestern Black Sea model system (CNWBSS), which integrates Deltares’ Catchment model, the SCHISM hydrodynamic core, and coupled wind-wave and sediment transport modules, effectively captures key coastal processes, as demonstrated through validation against observational data. The high-resolution system (horizontal grid resolution up to 100 m near the coast) enables the explicit representation of finer-scale oceanic processes, such as submesoscale structures relevant to the modulation of biogeochemical processes and tracer transport (e.g., pollutants). The coupling of wave and sediment transport also shows good agreement with observations. CNWBSS offers valuable insights into coastal processes, such as freshwater influence on coastal dynamics, sediment resuspension, mixing, and coastal variability, thereby supporting applications for both scientific research and coastal management purposes.
Addressing target audiences and expressing needs
- Collaboration
The main needs are to assure a broad diffusion of the availability of such a prototype, both for research and academia, as well as for the regional and local authorities and policy makers. The potential uptake of the prototype by regional monitoring authorities and the knowledge transfer are goals and all the actions needed to get in contact with those actors is needed
