International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA): Young Scientists Summer Program 2026

Description

The YSSP is a three-month full-time summer research programme hosted by IIASA in Laxenburg (Austria) that brings together advanced doctoral students (ideally about two years prior to thesis completion) from around the world. Participants are mentored by senior IIASA scientists, work within IIASA’s interdisciplinary research programmes, and produce a research project/paper as part of their stay. The Finnish call via the Research Council of Finland supports Finnish-based doctoral candidates selected to the YSSP by covering travel and accommodation costs (for up to three candidates per year).

Funding Amount

  • The call intends to cover the selected candidates' travel and accommodation expenses in Austria.
  • The budget is for up to three doctoral candidates based at a Finnish host research site.

Submission Deadlines

  • Submission deadline: 12 January 2026.
  • IIASA application side: deadline for 2026 is Monday 12 January 2026

Submission Conditions

  • Applicants must be doctoral students advanced in their PhD (ideally ~2 years before completion).
  • The doctoral candidate must have been selected by IIASA for the YSSP; the Finnish funding is for those selected.

Expected Outcome

  • The candidate produces a research paper during the summer programme that serves as a first step towards a publishable journal article under IIASA’s mentorship.
  • Enable Finnish doctoral candidates to gain international research experience and integrate into IIASA’s global network.

Scope

  • Doctoral candidates (PhD students) selected for IIASA’s YSSP (2026 cohort) are eligible for this funding.
  • The candidate’s research topic must be compatible with IIASA’s research programmes (e.g., systems analysis of global‐scale challenges: climate, energy, ecosystems, demographic change, policy, etc.).
