ANR Generic call for proposals – AAPG 2026

Description

The Generic Call for Proposals 2026 (AAPG 2026) is the French National Research Agency’s (ANR) main call. It is open to all scientific disciplines and public or private research stakeholders in France—including SMEs, large companies, associations, and foundations. The call supports a wide range of research: fundamental, industrial, and experimental development, embracing exploratory, breakthrough, or data-driven projects. Project durations can range from 24 to 60 months, depending on scope.

Funding Instruments

The Generic Call for Proposals 2026 involves five funding instruments. These instruments aim to fund individual research projects coordinated by young researchers (JCJC instrument); or ambitious research projects led by a team (PRME instrument); or collaborative research projects in a national context (PRC instrument) or bilateral international context (PRCI instrument); or collaborative research projects including a company as a partner (PRCE instrument).

New for PRCE instrument: In step 1, PRCE projects no longer require the submission of a scientific document, but only the online completion of a project characterization form and the online completion of the CVs of the coordinators and scientific leaders of partners. This registration, subject to meeting the eligibility criteria applicable in step 1, gives rise to an automatic invitation to step 2, without evaluation of the value of this registration by the scientific evaluation panels.

When submitting a project, researchers choose the most appropriate funding instrument for their scientific objectives and partnership. The funding instrument cannot be modified during the selection process.

Each funding instrument having its specificities in terms of submission, eligibility and evaluation, scientific coordinators are invited to carefully read the descriptions of the funding instruments in AAPG 2026 call text.

Submission Deadlines

Step 1 – Pre-proposals / Registration

  • Publication & opening: July 2025 (Work Programme and call text).
  • Guide and submission framework released: Early September 2025.
  • Deadline: 14 October 2025, 17:00 (Paris time).
  • Notification of Step 1 results: February 2026.

** Step 2 – Full Proposals**

  • Submission opens: February 2026 (full proposal form issued).
  • Deadline: End of March 2026 (exact date provided to invited applicants).
  • Rebuttal stage: Last week of May 2026.
  • Results (JCJC, PRME, PRC, PRCE): June 2026.
  • Contracting: From September 2026.
  • PRCI results: Between September and December 2026, aligned with foreign agency negotiations.

Submission Conditions

  1. Two-step process:
    1. Step 1: pre-proposal + administrative forms (for PRC, PRME, JCJC), or registration (for PRCE, PRCI).
    2. Step 2: full proposal including a detailed scientific document, administrative and financial forms, CVs, etc.
  2. Memory effect: Resubmissions from previous editions may bypass evaluation if criteria match.
  3. Instrument choice is final: The selected funding instrument cannot be changed mid-process.
  4. Scientific themes are fixed: The theme chosen in step 1 determines the evaluation panel and cannot be altered later.
  5. Evaluation process: Peer-reviewed via scientific evaluation panels and external reviewers. Step 2 includes rebuttal.

Eligible Types of Participants

The call welcomes participation from:

  • Public or private research organisations in France.
  • Companies—including SMEs and large corporations.
  • Associations, foundations, and other stakeholders involved in research.
  • Young researchers, single teams, national or international collaborations (depending on the chosen instrument).

Eligible Countries

Primarily open to applicants established in France.

  • International collaboration (PRCI) is allowed through defined bilateral agreements.
  • Collaborators abroad may participate, but must align with the rules and eligibility of both ANR and foreign agencies.

Type of Projects Supported

The call supports both individual projects (via JCJC and PRME instruments) and collaborative projects:

  • National collaboration: PRC.
  • Company-inclusive: PRCE.
  • International collaboration: PRCI.

Expected Outcome

While no specific outcomes are mandated, the call aims to:

  • Fund innovative research across a vast thematic spectrum.
  • Encourage interdisciplinary, exploratory, and high-impact projects.
  • Promote scientific excellence and enable researchers to pursue ambitious objectives within the national research landscape.

Scope

  • Structured into 57 research themes, spanning:
    • 38 themes across 7 main scientific domains:
      Environmental Sciences, Materials & Engineering, Life Sciences, Humanities & Social Sciences, Digital Sciences, Mathematics, and Subatomic/Universe/Earth Sciences.
    • 19 cross-cutting themes, including Sustainability, Digital Transformation, One Health, Environmental Transition, Energy Transformation, Technological Transitions, and Socio-technical System Transformations.
  • Projects must align with one of these themes: the chosen theme determines the scientific evaluation panel (CES) for assessment.
