Result description
Composite parts can only be recycled – or even better reused – if they are detachable from other structures. INVENT GmbH, Fraunhofer IWU and EDAG developed different technologies to make composite components ready for circular economy!
The partners are already very familiar with standard detachable joints like bolting connections. Thus two methods to detach adhesive connections were under examination by the partners. On the one CNC wire saw cutting has been identified as a very simple, but effective methods for connections of simple geometries. On the other hand a new method for a thermo-mechanical detaching was examined. A blowing agent used to create foams in other applications has been used to provide a thermo-linked detaching. When the connection is heated above a certain temperature the blowing agent increases its volume by more than 10 times destroying the adhesive cohesively.

R&D, Technology and Innovation aspects
The technologies were developed and tested intensively. Testing for assembly and disassembly was performed as well as long-term tests of the material performance during use. All tests were passed and delivered outstanding results on adhesive strength as well as on the applicability of the processes.
We developed very simple but outstanding technologies that can be used by any producer of components, vehicles or in any other industry.
