Funding Programme for Projects on “Alternative Methods to Animal Testing”

The funding guideline aims to strengthen Germany’s internationally leading role in developing alternative methods to animal testing based on the 3Rs principle (Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement). The initiative promotes research and validation projects (Module I) and dissemination and implementation strategies for alternative methods (Module II).

Eligible are excellent research projects that:

  • develop or optimize methods to replace or reduce animal testing, or reduce the suffering of laboratory animals (Module I),

  • disseminate such methods through training, implementation concepts, and workshops (Module II).

Both modules require a clear strategy for practical application. Support includes mentoring and may be extended by a two-year follow-up project if recommended by reviewers. Projects must ensure usage of results within Germany, the EEA, or Switzerland.

Deadlines:

  • Opening date: January 1, 2022

  • Submission deadline: March 15 of each calendar year

  • Type: Multiple fixed deadlines

  • End of measure: June 30, 2032 (latest possible)

Expected Outcome

The political goal is to expand the scientific basis for alternative methods and reduce animal testing in practice. The program aims to increase attractiveness for researchers, ensure the dissemination and validation of developed methods, and achieve practical maturity for implementation (e.g., through standardization, training, or regulatory uptake).

Scope

Module I: R&D projects and validation studies replacing, reducing, or refining animal testing, applicable in regulatory, applied, and basic research. Also includes education, production, and preservation processes where animal testing occurs.

Module II: Projects for dissemination (e.g., trainings, courses), implementation strategies, support studies, and workshops related to the 3R concept. National participation in international projects is possible.

Ziel dieser BMBF-Förderrichtlinie ist es, Deutschlands führende Rolle im Bereich tierversuchsfreier Methoden (nach dem 3R-Prinzip: Replacement, Reduction, Refinement) weiter auszubauen. Gefördert werden:

  • Forschung und Validierung neuer oder verbesserter Alternativmethoden (Modul I),

  • Konzepte zur Verbreitung und Implementierung von Alternativmethoden, z. B. Schulungen, Kurse, Workshops (Modul II).

In beiden Modulen wird eine effiziente Verwertungsstrategie erwartet. Förderfähig ist auch eine Projektbegleitung durch Mentoren. Erfolgreiche Projekte können um eine zweijährige Anschlussförderung verlängert werden. Die Ergebnisse dürfen nur in Deutschland, im EWR oder der Schweiz genutzt werden.

Fristen:

  • Start: 1. Januar 2022

  • Einreichfrist: Jährlich am 15. März

  • Abgabetyp: Mehrere feste Stichtage

  • Ende der Maßnahme: spätestens 30. Juni 2032
