International Places of Innovation: Identifying Challenges of International Value Creation, Developing Solutions Collaboratively, Strengthening Technological Sovereignty (OdIn)

This call is part of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) framework programme “Future of Value Creation – Research on Production, Services and Work”. The programme supports research on coordinated interplay between competencies, key technologies, and social processes which underpin value creation.

Objectives:

The OdIn initiative pursues four interlinked objectives:

  1. Researching Future Forms of International Value Creation:
    Projects should address analytical questions related to digitalized, cross-border value creation linked to Industry 4.0, incorporating AI and novel business models.

  2. Establishing International Research Collaborations among Early-Career Scientists:
    Projects should build cross-national scientific partnerships anchored in Germany to form “International Places of Innovation.”

  3. Strengthening Value Creation and Technological Sovereignty in Germany:
    Projects should explore how socio-technical innovations in global value networks influence the ability to define and implement own values and goals.

  4. Innovating Value Creation through Interdisciplinary Research:
    Dialogue across disciplines and with societal actors is encouraged to address global economic, social, and environmental challenges collaboratively.

Eligible Participants:

  • Public and private higher education institutions and non-university research organizations in Germany.

  • For-profit organisations may join as advisory board members but are not eligible for funding.

Key Participation Conditions:

  • Projects must be collaborative (2–3 German research institutes + 1 international partner).

  • Each project must include at least one STEM and one non-technical discipline.

  • A full-time postdoctoral researcher (PhD) must lead the project.

  • The international partner must stay in Germany for at least 12 months.

  • Projects must last up to 2 years.

  • Projects must utilize or expand existing infrastructure (avoid duplication).

  • 15 July 2025

  • 15 January 2026

  • 15 July 2026

  • 15 January 2027

  • 15 July 2027

Applications must be submitted via easy-Online.

Expected Outcome

The program contributes to the objectives of the "Framework Program Research and Innovation for Technological Sovereignty – FITS2030" by focusing on international cooperation and industrial key technologies. It aims to enhance the ability of science to collaboratively and internationally address future, globally relevant questions of digitally networked value creation using various disciplinary approaches.

Scope

The BMBF funds interdisciplinary research consortia composed of:

  • 2–3 German scientific institutions (chairs, departments, etc.)

  • One internationally based scientist (must spend 12 months in Germany)

Projects must address at least two of the six perspectives from the "Future of Value Creation" programme:

  1. Resources

  2. Socio-technical and methodological innovations

  3. Networking and collaboration

  4. Dynamics of value creation systems

  5. People in value creation

  6. Business models and user promises

Eligible costs include:

  • Personnel (PostDocs, scientific staff)

  • Mobility & accommodation (German and international)

  • Workshops, publications, consumables, software, services from third parties

Projects must provide clear scientific and innovative contributions, including interdisciplinary work and relevance to technological sovereignty.
