Result description
The agent-based model can be used to analyse and improve upstream fish migration facilities, which is a crucial factor for sustainable fish populations. The hydropeaking module can be used to assess the impacts of rapid flow changes on fish populations and to develop operational mitigation concepts as well as design structural mitigation measures. This can help operators in meeting the ecological and environmental obligations and targets under European environmental legislations and subsequently support better permission procedures for HPPs
Addressing target audiences and expressing needs
- To raise awareness and possibly influence policy
- Collaboration
Water managers and operators of hydraulic installations (hydro power plants or similar) who are interested in mitigation of existing and optimization of planned migration facilities.
- EU and Member State Policy-makers
- Research and Technology Organisations
- Private Investors
R&D, Technology and Innovation aspects
First model version with basic behavioral rules for two fish species is available. Further research work to gain furhter insights in hydraulic and other environmental cues for fish movements is on the way.
The model is further being devloped to adapt it to customers need, e.g. integrating different fish species and their requirements.
Since the results are based on hydrodynamic calculations the model application is replicable in other sites. However, die behaviour of fish in differen sites and rivers is presumalbe different. Thus, the calibration(validation of the model using telemetry data from the respective site of application is strongly recommended.
The appliation of the habitat model CASiMiR and its modules is one of the pillars in the acitivities of SJE Ecohycarulic Engineering. The software is used by numerous scientific and several commercial institutions in many countries.
