Result description
Climate services for the agri-food sector will contribute to making European agriculture and food systems more resilient, sustainable, and efficient in the face of climate change. MED-GOLD has co-developed climate services with users, employing state-of-the-art climate data, either building on existing tools with a high reputation in the respective sectors or creating new tools from scratch. The services rest on the MED-GOLD ICT platform, which is now at an advanced development level and can be replicated over wider geographical areas and in other sectors.
The ICT platform was designed and developed as a scalable modular system, both by designing it as a data pipeline of independent microservices connected by standard REST APIs and technologically by leveraging technologies such as autoscaling, container orchestration, and serverless platforms to ensure its applicability to a large array of use cases, regardless of the number of potential users. This flexible ICT platform encompasses a wide variety of use cases such as: running heritage crop system models as a scalable application as a service; developing custom dashboards that include design and functionality already tested by the project; connecting existing decision support tools and simulation models programmatically (i.e., machine-to-machine) to cutting edge climate data sources; retrieving and real-time updating of seasonal climate forecast data with on-the-fly bias correction. This makes MED-GOLD project results readily implementable beyond the project at the demonstration and market level.

The MED-GOLD ICT platform was designed and developed as a scalable modular system, both by designing it as a data pipeline of independent microservices connected by standard REST APIs and technologically by leveraging technologies such as autoscaling, container orchestration, and serverless platforms to ensure its applicability to a large array of use cases, regardless of the number of potential users.
The MED-GOLD ICT ecosystem is based on an ICT platform that encompasses a wide variety of use cases such as: running heritage crop system models as a scalable application as a service; developing custom dashboards that include design and functionality already tested by the project; connecting existing decision support tools and simulation models programmatically (i.e., machine-to-machine) to cutting edge climate data sources; retrieving and real-time updating of seasonal climate forecast data with on-the-fly bias correction. This makes MED-GOLD project results readily extensible to other regions and crops, which the project tests using Colombian coffee.
The long-term goal of the MED-GOLD project is to make European agriculture and food systems more resilient to climate change, using climate services to minimize risks/costs and seize opportunities for added value. Evidence suggests that the Mediterranean region is under immediate threat of shifting climate patterns and the associated ecological, economic and social effects. Developing a capacity to turn the increasingly big climate-related data into tailored climate services that can inform decision-making in agriculture, is therefore a priority for achieving sustainability both in Europe and worldwide.
