Result description
Head worn displays (HWD) has the potential to shape the future of human-computer interface. Various design approached have been researched for decades, but no solution has proved yet to address all points required for satisfactory user experience and wide consumer acceptance. In Wear3D project, we proposed the holographic HWD approach, and demonstrated that using holographic HWDs it is possible to achieve wide FOV, high image quality, attractive form factors and natural 3D all at the same time; which is not possible to achieve with any other method. We’ve also applied our results to head-up-displays (HUD) for next generation cars.
Wear3D ERC advanced project resulted in more than 10 patents and led to two well-funded spinoff companies for the commercialization of novel technologies. Companies are focused on head-up displays for automotive, head-worn displays for industrial applications.
During the project, multiple approaches for head worn display (HWD) designs have been explored, and it has been shown (as shared in a number of disseminations) that the holographic approach has the potential to provide the ultimate solution for HWD domain. In particular, we showed that with the holographic approach, it is possible to simultaneously achieve retinal resolution, wide field of view, attractive form factor and natural three dimensional visual experience with proper depth cues, free of any visual discomfort associated with accommodation/vergence conflict.
