PQC-Enabled B-RAN: System Integration Across Heterogeneous Edge Platforms

Main features:

The result showcases the integration and experimentation of Blockchain technologies within an O-RAN architecture, combined with Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) for blockchain signing at the network edge.

Objectives:

Leveraging Italtel’s expertise as a system integrator, this result applies Blockchain and PQC solutions from the NANCY project to multi-operator O-RAN scenarios. It targets cases where a UE can access services from two different operators and use heterogeneous edge resources (Arm or Intel-based). Blockchain with PQC signing enables secure, trusted inter-operator interaction (provided an agreement is in place) while supporting reliable edge offloading in a multi-vendor, multi-architecture environment. These capabilities integrate naturally into Italtel’s system integration activities.

Advantages:

The ITL testbed is enhanced with features for secure resource sharing and trusted interaction, strengthening its value for customers.

What is new:

Experimentation of Blockchain on O-RAN combined with PQC signing at the edge.

Why it matters:

It strengthens protection against quantum attacks and future-proofs security across diverse edge environments.

Current stage description

Current Stage: TRL 4 – Experimental proof of concept and technological validation on the ITL testbed, demonstrating Blockchain and PQC integration in O-RAN with heterogeneous edge resources.

Next Steps: Move towards TRL 5-6 through extended testing for reliable, production-ready integration and potential industrial deployment.

Scalability

The model scales through multi-operator applicability, support for heterogeneous edge hardware, and cloud-native deployment, enabling wide geographical coverage and diverse service offerings.

Replicability

The result is highly replicable due to its modular, open, and technology-neutral design. Blockchain and PQC in O-RAN can be deployed across operators and heterogeneous edge infrastructures, ensuring interoperability and secure, quantum-resistant edge services.

Sustainability

The result is potentially sustainable technologically, environmentally, economically, and operationally. Modular, open design with PQC ensures future-proof security. Multi-operator edge sharing reduces energy use, lowers costs, and supports scalable, long-term deployment in diverse edge ecosystems.
