Result description
The BIOTRAILS Nexus Scenario Simulator is a web-based decision-support tool that transforms complex Participatory System Dynamics Models (PSDM) into an interactive interface. Built for the Biodiversity-Climate-Society Nexus, it enables users to test policy and market interventions across four global value chains: Cocoa, Gold, Fisheries, and Aquaculture.
The simulator bridges the “accessibility barrier” of traditional scientific modelling, which usually requires specialised software and training. By providing an intuitive platform, it democratizes knowledge and mitigates “policy uncertainty.” Unlike static reports or simple dashboards, it features “Leverage Point Visualisation,” identifying areas where specific interventions trigger the most significant systemic change. This allows users to pre-test “what-if” scenarios, visualising long-term impacts and avoiding unintended consequences—such as a climate policy inadvertently harming biodiversity.
It targets EU/national policymakers, corporate sustainability leads, and NGOs.
Addressing target audiences and expressing needs
- To raise awareness and possibly influence policy
- Collaboration
- Fellowship to advance my/our research
Targeting EU/national policymakers, we need the tool integrated into Impact Assessments for evidence-based legislation. We aim for corporate sustainability leads to adopt the simulator for supply chain stress-testing and alignment with TNFD/CSRD standards. Finally, we need NGOs and local stakeholders to use the tool for science-based advocacy and capacity building. This engagement ensures the simulator moves beyond research to become a standard instrument for nature-positive decision-making.
