Result description
The project delivers a distributed and intelligent data platform addressing the growing challenges of data management and processing in modern radio astronomy. Advances in radio telescope technology have led to the generation of terabytes of data, requiring coordinated storage, processing, and analysis across geographically distributed infrastructures.
The EXTRACT platform integrates heterogeneous computing and data resources into a unified system, enabling efficient orchestration, data sharing, and processing. This approach reduces delays and inefficiencies associated with fragmented workflows and improves the effective use of computing and energy resources.
The TASKA use case validates the platform in a real radio astronomy scenario, processing large-scale telescope data within hours rather than weeks. This enables near–real-time detection of solar radio bursts and the identification of transient events in archived datasets. The results demonstrate that federated, coordinated infrastructures can significantly accelerate scientific workflows and transform large-scale data from a bottleneck into an enabler of discovery and collaboration.
Addressing target audiences and expressing needs
- Use of research Infrastructure
To further develop and deploy this platform, we are seeking new funding, HPC resources, and partnerships with observatories and industry to scale its capabilities, enhance AI-driven analysis, and share the technology with the wider radio astronomy community
- Research and Technology Organisations
- Academia/ Universities
R&D, Technology and Innovation aspects
Next steps include further optimisation, increased automation, and validation at larger scale, together with additional funding and technical support to deploy the platform in operational settings and enable uptake by a wider user community.
Has been tested on the EOSC
Open source products means that other scienstists or stakeholders can reuse the technology for their own needs. It’s deployment in EOSC means it can be used in different infrastructures.
