Cybersecurity academic startup accelerator programme Y10 phase one

Description

This competition is run by Innovate UK in partnership with the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT). It funds UK registered academic institutions to join the Cyber Security Academic Startup Accelerator Programme (CyberASAP). The goal is to help transform cyber security research ideas from academia into commercial opportunities.

Funding amount

  • Each project’s total eligible costs must be between £5,000 and £32,000.
    • Maximum of £16,000 per phase (Phase 1 consists of two phases: value proposition and market validation).

Funding is awarded at 100% of eligible project costs.

Submission deadlines

  • Competition opens: 19 January 2026
  • Competition closes: 11 February 2026 at 11:00am UK time
  • Applicants notified: 26 February 2026
  • Earliest project start: 1 April 2026

Submission conditions

  • Applications must be submitted through the Innovation Funding Service.
  • Projects must meet eligibility (academic institution, commercialisation focus, UK work).
  • Non-compliant or incomplete applications will be rejected.

Eligible types of organisations

  • Lead: UK registered academic institutions (universities, research institutions) with support from their technology transfer offices.
  • Collaborators (optional): Other UK academic institutions focused on commercialisation. All collaborators must be invited into the application.
  • Non-funded partners can be included; these can be UK or non-UK and may work from their home countries, but do not receive grant payments.

Expected Outcome

Phase 1 projects should:

  • Develop and validate a value proposition for a cyber security solution.
  • Establish initial market validation insights and determine commercial potential.
  • Potentially qualify selected teams to proceed to Phase 2 of the accelerator.

Scope

Projects should:

  • Come from UK academic research with an innovative cyber security idea.
  • Focus on commercialising or validating the value proposition and market potential early in development.
  • Participate in a 10-month programme, with Phase 1 lasting up to four months and covering value proposition development and market validation.

Areas encouraged (not limited to):

  • Security and resilience of operational technology (OT)
  • Software supply chain security and resilience
  • Emerging opportunities and technologies (e.g., AI for security, drones, robotics)
