Photonic and Quantum-Based Technologies for Medical Diagnostics and Therapy

This funding initiative aims to promote innovative photonic and quantum-based technologies to significantly improve medical diagnostics and therapy. The projects should address either combinations of existing photonic/quantum methods with other technologies (Module A) or develop fundamentally new quantum-based or photonic methods with potential medical applications (Module B). The funding supports collaborative pre-competitive research and development projects with a high risk and technological complexity. A clear application perspective and collaboration between industry, research institutions, and clinical end-users are mandatory. Deadlines for submission of proposals:

  • Module A: April 30, 2025
  • Module B: June 30, 2025

Important conditions include:

  • Industry-led project coordination is typically required.
  • Active involvement of SMEs is encouraged.
  • Research institutions and companies must have an operating presence in Germany.
  • A consortium agreement regulating cooperation must be established.

Expected Outcome

The funding aims to significantly enhance medical diagnostics and therapeutic procedures through innovative photonic and quantum technologies, improving specificity, sensitivity, analysis speed, precision, and sustainability in healthcare applications. Long-term cooperative relationships between science, industry, and medical research should be established, strengthening supply chains and fostering the transfer of fundamental research into medical, industrial, and societal use. The success will be measured by marketable technologies, publications, patents, and subsequent economic impact.

Scope

Funding covers innovative and high-risk pre-competitive research and development projects in medical and biotechnological applications using photonic and quantum-based technologies. Projects must demonstrate a clear medical application perspective, such as improving diagnostic speed, sensitivity, or specificity. Examples include fluorescence microscopy, optical coherence tomography, quantum imaging, and quantum sensing. Module A focuses on system-level integrations with immediate practical applications, while Module B targets highly innovative foundational research. The involvement of system integrators and clinical end-users is mandatory.
