Technology transfer from LEITAT to Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant was achieved for the fermentative production of bio-emulsifiers with marine strains Ruegeria mobilis MCTG34d and Halomonas sp. MCTG35b1. Different downstream processing strategies were investigated, and an efficient and industrially feasible fractionation process was developed and optimized for the biopolymer products. The fermentative production was subsequently scaled up from 10 L lab scale runs to 150 L batches and further to a pilot scale 1.5 m³ fermentation batch. As such, significant amounts of different product fractions were generated and could be send out to the different partners within the MARISURF project. While this includes the research institutions working on identification and characterization of the different products and their properties, end products were also sent out to end-users in different industrial sectors, where the compounds were tested for their application performance. Then, fermentative production and downstream processing could be fine-tuned based on the desired product properties and their performance for different end-user applications.
