A pair of papers stemming from efforts of the Tara Oceans expedition paints a global picture of plankton diversity and activity. Together the studies indicate not only higher species-level diversity but also larger pools of genes that can be expressed closer to the equator and suggest region-dependent capacities for adaptation and predictions of the impact of severe warming of the surface ocean by the end of the 21st century.
