Result description
Estonian scientists in the MANTEL EJD ITN have looked at the effects of ‘atmospheric stilling’ over a 54 year period on Lake Võrtsjärv (EE). They showed that stilling actually resulted in changes in the suspended sediment levels in the shallow lake and led to the opening of a “light niche”, which was capitalised and filled by the light-limited phytoplankton community. They suggest that wind stilling is another global factor, complementary to climate warming, that may affect algal populations in lakes and provide an additional challenge to the assessment of the ecological status of shallow lakes.
