Hybrid Underwater Augmented Reality (HUWAR) is a technology that adopts hybrid tracking techniques (acoustic positioning systems + visual odometry) to provide divers with assisted UW navigation and augmented visualization of a hypothetical 3D reconstruction of the archaeological remains as appeared in the past. The experimentation proved that the UWAR technologies contribute to have a better comprehension of the UW site, thus improve the “visit experience” of a diver. UW AR is mostly an unexplored area with very few solutions, most of them for controlled environments, whereas the UW navigation is mainly related to military applications. The HUWAR is the first attempt in using the AR in UW environments for recreational diving activities and for the exploitation of UCH sites. It is primarily addressed to Diving Centres, tour operators, which may offer a rich and immersive experience to divers (commercial targets of this fast-growing market) visiting UW cultural and naturalistic sites.
