Result description
The global market of nutraceuticals is projected to grow at a CAGR of over 7% in volume during 2021-2023. Astaomega’s process has been optimized for producing astaxanthin and omega-3 (EPA), simultaneously in a carbon negative process. Astaomega’s value proposition is built on 1) optimization of microalgae cultivation for the simultaneous production of food grade astaxanthin and omega-3; 2) the microalgal strain Nanochloropsis gaditana, ASTAOMEGA which patent application has been recently deposited. The proposed process makes no use of GMO and it is based on single stage culturing method, enabling the cutting costs and reduce the environmental impact in large-scale production. The developed technology (validated at TRL6) is expected to produce 500-900Kg per year of oil enriched in astaxanthin and EPA in a 60.000L volume plant. The main application sector identified is aquaculture and in a near future human nutrition.

The global market of nutraceuticals is projected to grow at a CAGR of over 7% in volume during 2021-2023. The demand for these substances is boosted by the growing awareness of consumers about the side-effects of a poor quality diet, as well as by their increasing concern for the side-effects of chemical ingredients utilized in food processing. The demand for natural ingredients able to promote health such as herbal and botanical extracts and marine-based derivatives is growing at a fast rate. The technology proposed provide new solutions to produce high value products which demand on the market is increasing. Moreover, the ASTAOMEGA technology allow to produce EPA is a more sustainable system compared to the current technology based on fish-oil extraction
