Result description
Primarily, DATAU is a distributed platform. By design, there is no central data storage- or processing entity. All data is stored by data processors (organizations that collect, and may process, data from the data subjects, who are the owners of the data) and not by DATAU. All permissions and data handling is done in a fully distributed manner, and decentralization is achieved due to the primary building block of DATAU – the DATAU node, called nodeU.
The task of nodeU is to maintain the distributed network on behalf of the data subjects and data processors. Through this node, permissions can be registered and administered between the data processors and the data subjects. The nodeU application exposes an API through which consent handling with data subjects can be realized, and through which data exchanges between data processors can be initialized.
Data transport itself is done using an application that runs on the data processor’s premises, called proxyU. (please see DATAU whitepaper under other information)

After successful piloting our GDPR solutions in the H2020 Poseidon project, we are now looking for organisations that want to commercially validate our GDPR compliant data sharing solutions. Application areas:
- GDPR-compliance application, designed for millions of private users, sharing data with services of Governmental Organisations;
- Data sharing network for industrial value chain, supporting cross-border company data-sharing (Industry 4.0)
- other suppliers of products and services for smart cities (eg. e-Health, e-Energy, e-Commerce, etc.).

R&D, Technology and Innovation aspects
The current status of DATAU is that the platform is designed (with POSEIDON as example), build and tested in 2 small pilots with e-services in healthcare and in home-energymanagement. The next steps is that we want to test the platform in truly largescale pilots (>10,000 users) and for that we are discussion potential projects with a few potential new customers (ASML, Ahold, MEF, MITA).
Scalability of the DATAU is embedded in its distributed, secured architecture, and carefully chosen technical solutions. Straight-forward to implement and flexible to run, dataU possesses modest operational requirements, with optional service models to support dataU organizations. In addition, the platform’s unique characteristics make it possible to leverage standardized access to create new services at organizational-level or even platform-wide.
The basis for DATAU replicability is allready proven in the 4 usecases that were executed within the POSEIDON project (Ministry of Finance Italy, City of Santander (Spain), Authorities in Malta via MITA and B2B applications via Softeam (France)) and 2 extra uses in healthcare with TopSportLabs in Belgium and energy management with Virtech in Bulgaria. Furthermore the platform’s unique characteristic of standardized access makes integration with existing or new e-services more easy and improves the replicability.
DATAU is designed for large scale use. For that we designed a 3-layered business model that enables the customers of dataU to choose different options:
- DATAU as a Development platform: DATAU Source-Code is available for ICT-companies/departments or Research groups, that wish to develop specific e-services on top. Additionally a DATAU-update and maintenance contract can be agreed.
- DATAU as a Service: DATAU as a data sharing & permission network service, to connect your own e-services and make it available to your network or community of users. Easy Plug and Play instructions, API and examples are supplied to the developers.
- DATAU customer specific solutions: If the above two options are not suitable, we can begin developmental project to design & build a customer specific solution.
