Result description
Results obtained in the EU FLEXCHX project
- Operational pressurized gasification pilot plant including gasifier, filter, catalytic reformer, and gas coolers
- The design capacity corresponds to 0.5 MW syngas output
- The plant can be operated with various ratios of steam, oxygen and CO2 as gasification agents
- Tests were carried out with wood, bark, forest residues and sunflower husk – the total gasification time was 350 hours
- Syngas is purified to synthesis gas quality in a smaller slip-stream
- In the project the gasifier was a staged fixed-bed reactor. Currently the plant has been modified to a circulating fluidized bed reactor.
Pilot scale gasification test facility to produce clean synthesis gas for various applications. The plant can be operated with different biomass and waste feedstocks including wood residues, agro-biomass, and pelletized RDF. The max feed rate is 100 kg/hour corresponding to 0,5 MW. The raw gas is filtered and reformed in a catalytic reformer where tars and most of hydrocarbon gases are converted to syngas. A small slipstream of syngas is purified to meet the requirements for synthesis process. This process can be used as a biomass alone plant or to simulate a hybrid plant integrating biomass gasification and electrolysis.
Addressing target audiences and expressing needs
- Business partners – SMEs, Entrepreneurs, Large Corporations
- Use of research Infrastructure
- Collaboration
With this gasification pilot plant we specifically want to:
- share new technology and show experimental results
We’re looking for new research and demonstration projects aiming to TRL5-6. The target is to take technology forward towards commercial implementation.
- Other Actors who can help us fulfil our market potential
- Research and Technology Organisations
- Private Investors
R&D, Technology and Innovation aspects
A technical basis for follow-on industrial pilot/demonstration projects has been created in EU FLEXCHX project. Results can be utilized in follow-on evaluation and design projects.
The pilot plant can be also used for new research and innovation actions aiming to new applications of biomass and waste gasification.
The process is flexible and can be used for different synthesis applications aiming to production of transport fuels or chemicals. As input the process can utilise various biomass residues and wastes as well as renewable energy. The pilot plant can be modified for various kind of applications.
VTT has a sustainable value proposition to its customers to create value to stakeholders, the environment and society.
