Result description
RECYCALYSE will develop a set of new electrocatalysts with improved activity and stability for PEM electrolysis that will reduce or potentially eliminate CRMs, substituting CRM with earth abundant sustainable materials. The catalyst materials involve new catalytic active sites, effective and stable catalyst supports as well as combinations of these for the oxygen evolution catalyst. Both the development of new active sites as well as supports are important steps to minimize the use of CRMs, i.e. the Ir and Ru content.
Increased performance: The project partners will fine tune the adsorption energy of the OER intermediates on the catalyst surface by introducing earth-abundant elements such as Ni, Mn or Cu in the catalyst formulation. This will increase the inherent activity of the catalytic sites, and, consequently, will improve the performance of the catalyst in the real electrolyser. This will reduce the overall electrolyses costs and the environmental footprint of PEM electrolysers by minimising or even totally avoiding CRMs like Ir or Ru.

R&D, Technology and Innovation aspects
Partner contributions:
DTI – synthesis of both active sites, and support structures, but with focus on the combined structure
UB – Development and synthesis of new active catalytic sites. Focus on CRM alloying.
ICT – Development and synthesis of new support structures
Strategy: KER to be protected with a patent. Possible joint ownership to be defined.
The development of the innovations will be of great interest both to SMEs and LE offering membrane electrode assembly (MEA) structures for electrolysers; companies commercializing catalyst and related materials, and research organizations and universities, to expand the research on the field.
