Result description
The CAPABLE solution is a state-of-the-art digital technology to foster the outpatient management ofcancer treatment aimed at patients and oncologists. The patient system is composed of a patient app(Android) and a smartwatch (Asus VivoWatch) that are used to gather physiological and healthinformation (PREM, PROM) to monitor the health status of the patients during a specific cancertreatment (e.g., immunotherapy). The app provides guidance on how to manage side effects andsuggests behavioural modifications to promote the overall wellbeing of the patients, improving theirquality of life. The oncologists can remotely follow up the health status of the patients and use aclinical decision support system that implements the current clinical guidelines (ComputerInterpretable Guidelines) for the management of therapy and side effects; the system also providesprognostic tools to assess the disease trajectory and the treatment response.
The main innoovation of the CAPABLE are:
- Harmonization the different types of intervention and the multidisciplinary hospital team for better meeting all the needs of a cancer patient (holistic approach)
- Inclusion of AI into the system for learning what interventions are most beneficial for the patient and for their dynamic adaptation to patient’s status changes
- Goal-based approach in the Decision Support System for better focusing the intervention on the patient’s need
- Representation language of clinical practice guidelines for including recommendations based on predictive models and multimorbidity management
- Communication and terminology standards and FAIR principles for data representation and data sharing both inside and outside the project
Addressing target audiences and expressing needs
- Collaboration

R&D, Technology and Innovation aspects
We are in process of development of the technology and we have a demonstrator available in English, Italian and Dutch. In Autumn 2022 we’ll start the pilot phase and in January 2023 a clinical study in 3 clinical centers (Pavia and Bari in Italy and Amsterdam )
Strategy is ongoing and will depend on project’s final clinical study
