SDS-WAS provides a set of services related to the mineral dust forecast. It collects numerical model outputs and observational data from a wide set of worldwide partners plus internally developed. A wide set of post-processed analysis and statistics are generated, and results in the form of plots, tables or numerical (binary) data are disseminated to a variety of users (public institutions, researchers, etc ). Finally, SDS-WAS also organises training courses on dust related research, to give capabilities for generated products usages and other kinds of events (seminars, workshops) related to dust research. The aim is to give support to institutional entities (e.g. National Meteorological Agencies) to warn about possible dust events and to foster the study of dust-related phenomena into the academic and research communities. The EOSC infrastructure will give the possibility to increase the volume of data hosted and processed, reach a wider set of end-users, improve the compliance to FAIR principles and robustness of the whole service infrastructure.
Addressing target audiences and expressing needs
- To raise awareness and possibly influence policy
- Collaboration
- Fellowship to advance my/our research
Our main targets are policy makers (to make them aware of our outcomes), national and international meteorological institutions (for contribution and dissemination of our products) and research and academia (for collaborations on improving our products, making new studies, adding new developments, and providing them our services).
- EU and Member State Policy-makers
- International Organisations (ex. OECD, FAO, UN, etc.)
- Academia/ Universities
R&D, Technology and Innovation aspects
The system is up and running from January 2022. We are identifying issues and improvements to be developed and will deploy periodical new releases of current services: web portal (managing all contents and users), internal aerosol model, daily dust dashboard (visual interactive application to access to our data) and numerical data download. Also, new services (i.e. a climate service dashboard) are in development and will be tested and deployed next year.
All software and processes are documented to reproduce the results. Some software packages are released publicly as open source, and others will be soon.
Our funding is proceeding from an agreement between BSC and AEMET in the framework of a WMO project. It’s a collaboration started in 2007 that is renewed every 2-3 or 5 years according to the current Spanish law.
