The Blue-Cloud Virtual Research Environment is a cloud-based analytical and publishing framework working as a federation and orchestration of computing platforms and analytical services for constructing, hosting and operating Virtual Labs for specific applications. Its services include the Enabling Framework (Identity and Access Management, VRE Management), a Collaborative framework (Workspace and Social Networking), a Data Analytics Framework (Software and Algorithm Importer, Smart Executor, Method Engine, RStudio, JupyterHub, ShinyProxy, and Docker Applications), and a Publishing Framework (Catalogue Service). Those services have been exploited to deploy and activate different Virtual Labs for specific applications in the marine and ocean domain. Additionally, the Blue-Cloud VRE provides an open and free access working environment to experiment with Blue-Cloud facilities.
The Blue-Cloud VRE is based upon the D4Science e-infrastructure as earlier developed and managed by CNR-ISTI. This e-infrastructure already hosted multiple Virtual Labs and offered a variety of services, which have been adopted and expanded for the Blue-Cloud.
