Result description
Plastics are the largest, most harmful, and most persistent fraction of the marine pollution, accounting for at least 85% of total marine litter. 165 million tons of plastic currently circulates in Earth’s marine environments and prevent the absorption of up to 8.25 billion tons of CO2 each year.
Avoiding and reversing the loss and degradation and restoring marine ecosystems is of highest importance for climate change mitigation actions with large adaptation co-benefits.
Recycllux provides means for a faster and more efficient collection of marine plastic by applying machine-learning algorithms on Earth Observation data to identify the marine plastic litter problem spots. Then, it uses blockchain to incentivize the collectors and encourage recycling. Our solution is enabling end-to-end recycling interventions, will save billion tonnes of CO2 and the natural systems.
We propose a systemic approach for preserving and restoring marine ecosystems which have an impact on emissions and removals of emissions, conservation and enhancement of these natural carbon sinks. Recycllux’s final service creates a recycling and material chain optimised for marine plastic litter building on ground-breaking technologies (Earth Observation, Machine Learning & Blockchain). Then, we have developed an online portal to present the waste collection interventions, incentivize the collectors and connect all actors in the plastics supply chain (recyclers, manufacturers). Based on sound scientific / technological foundation, our cross-value chain approaches leverage alliances with polluting companies (that need to prove they are accountable for the plastic waste), with fishing ships and local NGOs to collect and sort the waste, and with recycling companies to transform the waste into second generation material. We are building an engaged community active in the fight against marine plastic pollution.
Addressing target audiences and expressing needs
- Investor introductions
- Expanding to more markets /finding new customers
- Venture Capital
We B2B Model targeting companies that need to be accountable for the plastic waste they generate (through Extended Producer Responsibility or Corporate Social Responsibility schemes). They currently do not have complete control/monitoring of the recycling interventions and thus cannot transparently share sustainability efforts with customers. They see our solution as a mean to implement their sustainability plans that can be shared with consumers in a trusted way (the blockchain enables full traceability). We partner with Collectors (fishing vessels), NGOs and Recycling facilities.

R&D, Technology and Innovation aspects
Parsec Accelerator (2020) helped us reach TRL 4, InnovationLabs Accelerator(2021) to build the MVP that was validated with relevant stakeholders during the Climate-KIC Black Sea ClimAccelerator (2022- TRL5). Our main challenge now is to increase the model’s accuracy by merging EO data with ground-truth data and wind/water currents data and validate our solution in a first end-to end intervention.
Recycllux has a B2B Model targeting companies (plastic polluters). Using Recycllux, they will fund the collection, delivery, and processing of plastic waste and enable EPR or CSR schemes to counterbalance the equivalent amount of plastic pollution emitted into the environment. Working through partners to collect and recycle, and tracing the full process, allows the company to monitor & evaluate operations through rigorous standards of measurement, enabling transparent communication of impact to the individual or organization going Plastic Neutral. The data is stored in the blockchain offers a full history of all items in the plastic waste management chain, enabling full Chain of Custody of the marine plastic from collection to recycling.
Revenue streams: Transaction fee per intervention – 5-10% depending on the size and complexity of the intervention.
Recycllux can be easily adapted to provide value to different sectors and industries.
Recycllux has a replicable business model. Due to proximity, we are initially targeting the Black Sea basin, where we have engaged with the relevant stakeholders to ensure commitment and support through the deployment of the marine plastic litter collection and recycling interventions. As the EO data becomes useful only when analysed together with ground-truth data and turned into information and knowledge (we develop basin specific datasets to be used as training data for the ML algorithm to develop a classifier that can automatically map and add information on the specific waste accumulation), we have an alliance signed with NGO Mare Nostrum to have access to the ground-truth data for the Black Sea. Partnerships for the collection and recycling of plastic waste are also in place for Romania. However, the model can be extended to cover other European or Worldwide basins trough the engagement with the specific local stakeholders (for ground-truth data, waste collection and recycling).
Recycllux has a sustainable business model focuses on adding value to stakeholders, the environment and society. The companies’ ability to demonstrate the positive social and environmental impacts of their operations and to trace the flow of marine plastic waste recycling will be critical to the development of the emerging socially responsible plastics sector and avoiding critical consequences. If no urgent action is taken, approximately 36 million tons will enter the marine waters each year in 2040. Marine plastic litter degrades and breaks down into microplastics that are found plastic debris as far as 11km deep in 88% of the marine waters’ surface. Marine animals, marine biodiversity are the immediate and visible victims of plastic pollution, and more than 1.5 million marine animals die every year: strangled, suffocated, starved, fatally injured. Furthermore, the plastic micro-particles also contaminates marine food chains and have serious human health consequences.
