Result description
The result is a Combine Heat and Power (CHP) solution able to be driven by different Renewable Energy Sources (RES) with optimized reversible operation for the improvement of existing thermal grids and the provision of services to electrical grids. It runs on biofuels, hydrogen, fuel flexible machine, solar. External combustion allows for reduced particulate generation. Storage is for short-time.

R&D, Technology and Innovation aspects
RANOTOR has started a company in Brazil that has got government money to demonstrate the steam engine system with concentrating solar collectors . RANOTOR has also discussed with farmers in Sweden about financing of agriculture version.
Our market research that includes different applications indicates a huge market. Now we have found the Agriculture market as the entrance market , which amounts to 73 billion EURO in Brazil and about the same market in Germany, which is the first market besides Swedish market.
We also have ongoing discussions with industries that have a lot of waste heat that can be converted into electricity and low grade heat. If we have understood things right, Brussel has found Waste Heat Recovery as a short route toward CO2 emissions.
Once the technology can be mass produced and mature and price goes down we target the consumer market amount to millions of units.
We also have discussions with different vehicle industries regarding modern steam engines as a self contained or hybrid propulsion system.
Furthermore, we have a collaboration with a company that wants to use the steam engine in a system producing synthetic fuel such as hydrogen, ammonia and methanol.
As explained for scalability, several markets can be served with the results.
The technology is based on very common material as iron, some alumina and small amount of nickel. There is also a small amount of graphite. However, compared to other power cycles as for instance fuel cell the steam engine system should be regarded as very sustainable when it comes to material.
Furthermore, when it comes to solar powered steam engine, the concentrating solar collector is manufactured with less rare earth metal than PV.
The same holds true to the Thermal Energy Storage that is manufactured mainly with concrete. That is considerably more sustainable than electric batteries.
