International Junior Research Groups for Primary Raw Materials – EGARoh_Junior

The funding call is designed to support the creation of international junior research groups aimed at addressing the growing need for skilled researchers in the exploration, extraction, and processing of primary raw materials. This initiative, launched by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) under the framework of sustainability research (FONA), is a strategic response to the increasing challenges of resource security and geopolitical dependencies. The European Union’s recent Critical Raw Materials Act, which seeks to diversify supply chains and reduce import reliance from single sources, further underscores the urgency of enhancing research capabilities in this domain.

The call targets early-career researchers by fostering the establishment of international research groups at German universities, non-university research institutions, subordinate authorities, and geological state offices. It aims to bridge the skills gap left by the decline in traditional mining practices by integrating advanced scientific research with practical, low-impact technological innovations. Projects are expected to focus on developing new methodologies such as remote sensing, autonomous robotic systems, and digital mining processes, while also emphasizing eco-efficient practices and renewable energy solutions.

Collaboration is a cornerstone of this initiative, as proposals must involve strategic partnerships with research institutions in raw material-rich countries, especially in Africa and South America. Such collaborations are intended to enhance global knowledge exchange, build capacity, and drive sustainable innovation in the mining and raw material sectors. The funding call also requires applicants to define clear, measurable success indicators, including improvements in research capacity, industry partnerships, and the practical application of new technologies.

The application process is divided into two stages: the initial submission of a concise project sketch via the electronic application system ‘easy-Online’ by 31 August 2025, followed by a detailed formal proposal from the shortlisted candidates.
